Luxembourg from the Eyes of John

m John, a poet from Pamplona who found his way to Luxembourg, trading the rhythm of verses for the pulse of a newsroom. I came here for a story, but I stayed for the quiet beauty of this city. In my heart, I’m still a poet, seeing the world through a lens of words, always searching for the next line in life’s unfolding poem.

Think of Luxembourg’s vibe: what three words come to mind?

Cosmopolitan, tranquil, historic.

And how would you describe the lifestyle in the city to someone who has never visited?

Luxembourg has a relaxed yet vibrant lifestyle. It’s a unique blend of modern urban living with a strong sense of community and tradition. You’ll find it’s a city where you can enjoy a cosmopolitan atmosphere while still appreciating the beauty of nature and the calmness of a smaller city.

It’s a lazy day, and you want to feel at peace and relax: where do you go?

I’d head to the Grund. It’s one of the most picturesque and peaceful parts of the city, with its cobblestone streets, old bridges, and the calm Alzette River running through. Perfect for a quiet walk or just sitting by the water and unwinding.

Can you share your hidden gem?

The Pfaffenthal Lift. It’s not just a lift—it offers stunning panoramic views of the city. And once you’re down in Pfaffenthal, you can explore a lesser-known, charming neighbourhood that feels like a little village within the city.

Describe your perfect day in the city. Where do you go and what do you do?

I’d start with a coffee at one of the cosy cafés in the Gare district, then take a stroll through the old town to admire the Grand Ducal Palace. After that, I’d visit the Mudam for some contemporary art. Lunch at a bistro in Clausen, followed by a walk in the Pétrusse valley. I’d finish the day with dinner in the Grund and maybe a glass of wine overlooking the river.

If you had to pick a single street or neighbourhood that defines the city for you, which would it be and why?

The Grund, hands down. It captures Luxembourg’s unique mix of history, beauty, and tranquillity. It’s where the old meets the new, with its medieval architecture and modern touches, all nestled in a valley surrounded by nature.

What is your go-to restaurant for a special occasion? Anything you would recommend ordering?

For a special occasion, I’d choose Le Sud in Clausen. The ambience is elegant, and the rooftop terrace offers fantastic views. I’d recommend trying the scallops—they’re exquisite.

Which cultural event or festival do you most look forward to each year?

The Schueberfouer is a must. It’s a huge fair with a history dating back to 1340, offering everything from rides and games to local food. It’s a big part of Luxembourgish culture and brings everyone together.

If you could change anything in the city, what would it be?

I’d improve public transport on weekends. The city has so much to offer, and it would be great if it were easier to get around without a car, especially for visitors and those who want to explore the city late into the evening.

What’s the most Instagrammable spot in the city?

The Chemin de la Corniche, often called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony”. The views over the old town, the river, and the fortifications are breathtaking, especially at sunset.
